What is commercial liability umbrella insurance?

In business, it’s important to be ready for both the growth you plan for and the surprises you don’t see coming. Commercial liability umbrella insurance (CLUP) provides additional protection for those rare but costly events that go beyond your standard policy limits. It also gives you the flexibility to extend your liability coverage across multiple policies at once.

How it Works:

Imagine your business has a general liability policy with a $1 million limit and a business auto policy with a $1 million combined single limit. That might seem like plenty—until something major happens. Suppose an employee causes a multi-vehicle accident while driving a company car, leading to severe injuries and $5 million in damages. Without additional coverage, your policies would only cover $1 million. A Commercial Liability Umbrella Policy (CLUP) could step in to cover the remaining $4 million—protecting your business from having to pay that amount out-of-pocket.

Do I need commercial liability umbrella insurance for my business?

If you lose a liability lawsuit and the judgment far exceeds your coverage limits, could you afford to pay the excess cost yourself? No matter how thoroughly you train your employees or how rigorously you design and implement your safety procedures, bad things can still happen. Not having enough coverage could bankrupt your business.

For most businesses, the question isn’t whether you need coverage — it’s how much you need. This is especially true if your operations involve:

  • Using company vehicles like cars, trucks, or vans

  • Frequent interactions with customers

  • Performing work on someone else’s property

You may also need a CLUP to meet specific liability requirements, such as:

  • Landlords requiring higher liability limits

  • Contracts that demand coverage beyond your existing policy limits
